History of Elco Wristwatches

Elco was primarily a British watch brand and importing/distribution company rather than a full manufacturer. The company, known as Elco Clocks and Watches Ltd, was founded in the early to mid-20th century by Polish émigré entrepreneur Alexander Margulies. Sources date its origins variably:

•  1932 (as a Swiss watch importer, becoming the UK’s largest clock and watch distributor by 1939)

•  1931 incorporation as Elco Clocks Ltd

•  1945 official registration

It specialized in importing Swiss-made movements and watches, often casing them in the UK (especially gold cases hallmarked in Britain) and selling them under the Elco name.
