A BRIEF HISTORY OF BENRUS WATCHES
Although the company went out of business in 1977, large numbers of their well made and dependable fine Benrus watches are available as vintage collectors’ items.
Way back in 1921 three brothers called Oscar, Ralph and Benjamin Lazrus founded the Benrus Watch Company. History doesn’t tell us why Benjamin was the brothers’ name that was chosen but the company name, Benrus, is a combination of the first syllable of his name and the second syllable of their family name. Benrus watches is sometimes mistaken for a Swiss watch making company because early in its history the American owned and operated company leased one floor of factory space from a Swiss owned watch making company that was located in La Chaux de Fonds in Switzerland. Their reason for doing this was to help to circumvent the draconian regulations against the use of Swiss watch movements in foreign time pieces. The earliest models of Benrus watches featured precision movements made by the Schild Company, a well known and established Swiss watch maker. The first watch casings from the Benrus Watch Company are not marked with their brand name due to the Swiss regulations discussed previously.
In the decade of the 1930’s the innovative and creative styling of Benrus watches started to attract quite a following. Their chic designs featured such innovations as cushion watches and rectangular shaped watch casings. It was during this period of time that the Benrus Watch Company first became well known to the American consumer market. The company continued to be known as a leader in style and design in the watch making industry. During the 1940’s they made a range of fine time pieces that are avidly sought after by vintage watch collectors today. Perhaps the most famous of these was the manually winding calendar watch.
Other brands that sold under the Benrus name were

SOVEREIGN

BELFORTE
In the 1960's through the late 70's, Benrus made military issue watches used by the Army and Navy. These were issued to servicemen fighting in the Vietnam War.

Early in the 1960's Ben and Ralph Lazrus were in their 70's and ready for retirement. By the mid to late 70's Benrus Incorporated was a diversified manufacturer of a number of consumer products. Companies included: Benrus Watch Co. Watches, Wells, Inc. Jewelry, and Destino, Ltd. - Christian Dior Products. An attempt to consolidate all the various manufacturing enterprises under one roof proved to be a much more expensive move than anyone calculated, and a final blow to the company which subsequently filed bankrupt in 1977.
The company was then sold, and after passing through several more hands, came under the ownership of the Hampden Company, which also owned "Fantasy Diamonds", with factories in both the Virgin Islands and Chicago. An attempt was made to bring back the Benrus brand under Hampden/Fantasy, which was somewhat successful but short lived. Among others, a reissue of Vietnam service watches proved very popular.

A History of Rolex Watches

Hans Wilsdorf founded the company we now know as Rolex in 1905. Born in Kulmbach, Germany in 1881, the company, Wilsdorf & Davies, was based in London. By 1908 it had become one of the leading watch companies in the UK. It was in this year that he coined the name Rolex.
Official Chronometer Certification was awarded to Rolex in 1910 from the "Bureau Officiel" in Switzerland, the first time this had ever been given to a wristwatch. This was to be the first of many accolades awarded to the watch, including the Class A Precision from the Kew Observatory in 1914.
In 1926 the Rolex Oyster was released. It was the first wristwatch to be considered waterproof, proven a year later when the watch was worn by the swimmer Mercedes Gleitze in his successful bid to cross the English Channel. This was beneficial to Wilsdorf whom had sponsored the event and gained considerable exposure for his new Oyster Watch. Wilsdorf recognized the importance of advertising and marketing his creation in order to gain publicity and prestige. 1931 saw the creation of the Perpetual Rotor, a mechanism now seen as the basis for self-winding movements. In the following years Rolex released the first Oyster Perpetual Lady-date (1954) the GMT Master with dual time zone function (1955) and the first Day-Date (1956).
Andre Heiniger took over the company following the death of Hans Wildorf on 06 July 1960. Rolex continued to invent and innovate in terms of technical skill and style throughout the 2nd half of the century. The Sea-dweller (1967) was certified as reaching depths of up to 1,220 meters making it the choice for Professional Divers - a point that was quickly adopted in advertising the model. The Explorer II (1978) and Cosmograph Daytona (1988) were also released to international waiting lists securing Rolex as one of the worlds most prestigious watch brands.

BRIEF HISTORY OF PAUL BUHRE (FAMOUSLY KNOWN AS PAVEL BURE IN RUSSIA) WATCHES

«Paul Buhre» founder
Paul Buhre watch company was founded in 1875
«Paul Buhre» manufacture
in St. Petersburg by Carl Bure, whose son Paul became his worthy successor.
In 1874, in the city of Le Locle (Switzerland), Paul purchased a large watch factory. In 1899, after Bure's death, Paul Buhre watch company was awarded the title of "The Official Supplier of the Imperial Court."
And, as Buhre had no heir, after his death the company was sold to a Swiss man, Jean-Georges Pfund and a Frenchman Paul Girard.
Paul Buhre watches always amazed and impressed the customers by their original design and high quality. However, even the experts of antique watches find it difficult to explain why Bure watches are so popular. Many watch companies, such as Winter and Omega, could not compete with Paul Buhre brand.
Paul Buhre released the watches for public at large, because the lowest price of its watch was only two rubles. The brand also produced expensive watches, made of silver or gold. It's worth mentioning, that Paul Buhre purchased the complicated movements, such as chronographs and repeaters, at the most famous Swiss watch companies. In 1916, Paul Buhre company received the Swiss patent ¹ 74 144 for the in-house chronograph.
At numerous international exhibitions the company was awarded the highest prizes.
In 1917, the Revolution put an end to the watchmaking business in Russia. It is worth saying, that there was a wall clock by Paul Buhre in the Kremlin, in Lenin's office.
Only in 2004, he company was reborn and “Pavel Karlovich Bure's Trading House” was created. And in 2005, new watch collections, produced by ancient tradition, were released.
It should be mentioned, that Pavel Bure, the famous Russian hockey player, who is a descendant of the watchmaker Bure, has decided to revive the watchmaking business of his great predecessor.
Paul Buhre watch mechanism
Paul Buhre watches are made in the

classical style. Each model is original: «M01010», «M0051», «M01015», «M0064», «M0066», «M00640», etc. Almost every watch is equipped with the Swiss ETA movement, the cases are round, made of stainless steel, the glasses are sapphire crystals, the straps are produced from crocodile leather. There are some models with the 46-hour power reserve. The golden watches are made of 18K rose or white gold.
M0063 wrist watch is a model of a great interest. The dial is turned in such a way, that it is rather handy to read the time in any situation, even while driving a car. Also  the crown has changed its location – it is placed at "12:00".
The company released a collection known as “Chasovnik”. On the watch dial there are the zodiacal symbols.
The watch admirers can enjoy Paul Buhre collections in the museums of Russia and  other countries.

Brief History of Jean d'Eve Sectora Wristwatch

When Tourneau introduced its famous Sectora wristwatch in 1980, it became an instant classic. This iconic art deco timepiece featured two retrograde hands encased in a distinctive asymmetric case.

The watch represented a totally different way to tell time and reminded many of an automobile speedometer. The historic watch featured a twenty oneautomatic Swiss movement and was available in stainless steel and 18K versions.

Although the original Sectora has been out of production for many years, it is still a highly sought after item on the auction market. With this illustrious history, it wasn’t surprising that when Tourneau opened its new four story flagship Madison Avenue Concept Store in June of 2011, they featured the Sectora in the store’s unique in-store museum.

Many manufacturers have produced watches with retrograde jump hour movements before, but the Sectora’s beautiful design and unique dual retrograde movement was the watch that really captured the public’s attention. Tourneau Asymetric Sectora Watch Displayed at the Tourneau Museum Jean d’Eve Sectora II Automatic Watch When renowned Swiss watchmaker Jean d’Eve re-introduced this double retrograde design in the mid-1980’s with it’s own Sectora series, a new star was born.

Jean d’Eve Sectora watches are now recognized as a pioneer in retrograde display technology. The new Jean d’Eve Sectora II Automatic builds on its predecessor’s double retrograde heritage with a new mechanical movement based on the famed ETA-2892. Jean d’Eve has added its own proprietary retrograde plate to this movement and fitted the artfully designed asymmetric case with a clear sapphire back, so you can see the movement in action. The Jean D’Eve Sectora II Automatic pays homage to the original Tourneau design, while updating the watch for today’s customer.
The 46mm x 37.5mm 18k white gold case is significantly larger than the original design’s 41mm x 32mm dimensions. In addition to the new automatic movement, the Sectora II features an easy to read date window at 12 o’clock and a choice of silvery white or charcoal gray dials. This masculine, retro inspired watch can be fitted with either a custom stainless steel bracelet for a sporty look, or an alligator strap for dressier occasions.

The Sectora II Automatic could easily see success that surpasses the original design that inspired it. The fit and finish of this beautiful art deco design is exceptional for a watch of this price range. Many consider this watch to be the most affordable of any Swiss made, mechanical double retrograde watch available today.

Jean d’Eve is a Swiss watch company founded in 1888 by Mr. Charles Barbezat. Watch DESCRIPTION: Jean D'Eve SECTORA watch automatic reveals an unusual read out of the time. Respectful to Jean d'Eve tradition yet very modern, the long expected Sectora Automatic completes well the Sectora family. You can almost find all world famous watches here in my blog. Who says a watch dial has to have a 360º dial? The Sectora watch from Jean d’Eve has hour and minute hands that move over a 120º angle.

HISTORY
In the Swiss watch industry, the year of 1850 is shown with pride and tradition. It marks the appearance of TECHNOS, a mark trade that would become famous in the whole world.

In the seventies, the Swiss watch industry was seriously affected by the new quartz technology, and needed help from the Swiss banks. A nominated interventor drastically reformulated a significant group of watch industries and launched with success a plastic disposable watch, under whose shelter, nowadays, are integrated most of the well-known swiss watch marks. TECHNOS, however, succeeded in striding a different venture.
The company decided to invest in material research and new technologies, as well as in the constant renovation of its lines of watches. At present are manufactures more than 600 models, establishing tendencies when the matter is design and industrial inovation.
