BRIEF HISTORY OF ORIS WATCHES
Oris was founded in 1904 by Paul Cattin and Georges Christian at Hölstein, Switzerland. Oris produced no-nonsense time pieces which were both high quality and affordable. With the advent of quartz, as with many other Swiss watch manufacturers, Oris struggled to find its place in the watch market.
However, Oris continued to focus on the manufacturing of mechanical watches. Oris has been able to hold its own creating watches with unique mechanical features that distinguish from those with electronics and quartz. Since the mid-eighties, Oris has progressively launched more mechanical watches with features such as analogue date pointers, automatic movement, mechanical chronographs, and analogue world time display. Interestingly, despite the turbulent changes the watch industry experienced, Oris has found itself doing what it always has, producing great value quality mechanical watches.
In 2004, Oris celebrated 100 years of existence and is going stronger than ever. Oris boasts many names wearing an Oris such as Sean Penn, Harrison Ford, Gwyneth Paltrow, Nicolas Cage, and Meg Ryan. Oris is also a key sponsor of the BMW Williams Formula 1 team, helping them to grow their brand awareness, and expand internationally.
The 2008 Oris range includes the TT3, Divers, Artelier, BC3, BC4, Big Crown, Miles, Chronoris, Classic and Flight Timer collections.

History of the Omega Speedmaster
The first chronograph with the name "Speedmaster" appeared in 1957. And that is pretty much the same Speedmaster as we know it today. On first sight.
Through the years, a lot of things were changed on this watch. For instance, the word "Professional" in 1966 when it was approved for NASA use (more on that later), in 1968 they (Omega) changed the movement from a calibre 321 (with "schaltrad") to a cheaper to produce, but more accurate calibre 861 (with shuttlesystem). Both movements were based on Lemania movements. Todays Speedmaster Professional watch still uses the 861 movement. Before 1957, there were also some chronographs (since 1942) using the 321 calibre but they had no "Speedmaster" written on the dial.
The first Speedmaster (1957) looked like this :
First Speedmaster
Foto scanned from Time Capsule
This model, referenced as CK2915 was created in 1957 and is nowadays hard to find. The watch has the 1/5th seconds, minute and hours markings in white on a black dial. The counters are located on 3 o' clock, 6 o' clock and 9 o' clock. The bezel contains engraved tachymetre figures (not very clear on the photo above).
The caseback is the one with the Seamaster logo because this type of watchcase was originally developed for the Seamaster (triple-shield case to enable it to withstand high pressure). The diameter of the watch-case was 39mm.
The movement used in this watch was a 27 CHRO C12, better known as the Cal.321 (manual winding).
The 27 stands for 27mm, the CHRO stands for "chronograph" and C12 indicates that the watch has an 12-hour counter (at 6 o'clock). This movement was designed by Albert Piguet (who worked for Lemania during those days) in 1942. It took Omega 15 years to produce this watch as it was released in 1957.
In 1959 they produced a slightly modified Speedmaster, known as CK2998. The watch-case diameter expanded from 39mm to 40mm and they added a so called O-ring gasket around the push buttons.

CK2998
Until 1966 there were no big changes on the watch (look for the "Differences through the years" in the menu for details). The NASA bought a Speedmaster along with some other chronograph watches to test it for use on their missions. Read all about it in the "Nasa tests" section of this website. After long and rigirous testing of the watch, the NASA concluded that the Omega Speedmaster was the most suitable watch for 'the' job. Omega decided to make this watch the Omega Speedmaster Professional. So the word "Professional" was added but it was still the same watch. The watch got also the 145.012 reference number. There are also watches from 1966 with 145.003, these are the non-Professionals from 1966.
In 1968, Omega decided to replace the cal.321 movement by a more accurate movement which was also cheaper to produce, the cal. 861 which was also produced by Lemania. This movement is still being used in the current line of Omega Speedmaster Professionals. The movement was a bit more accurate, 21600A/h instead of 18000A/h. It also uses a shuttle cam instead of a "schaltrad" for the chronograph. Changes on the outside : white marked Omega-symbol instead of metal applied Omega-symbol and a flat dial.
Speedmaster
In 1969, the first man walked on the moon.. Neil Armstrong. He didn't wear his Omega Speedmaster Professional. The clock inside the Lunar Module went broke, and he hung his Omega Speedmaster Professional in the Lunar Model as a clock-replacement. Buzz Aldrin, he did wear his Omega Speedmaster Professional. So his watch was the first watch worn on the moon. It was a Omega Speedmaster Professional with a cal. 321 movement (confirmed by Omega). A few months after the landing on the moon, Buzz's watch was stolen and never returned.
In 1978, the watch was produced with an engraved caseback. "Fligt Qualified by NASA for all manned space missions - The first watch worn on the moon". Some casebacks have another text or logo engraved, No explanation at this time.

Suunto Story

COMPANY BACKGROUNDSuunto was founded in 1936 by outdoors man and a keen orienteering enthusiast Tuomas Vohlonen, who had long been bothered by a problem: the inaccuracy of traditional dry compasses and their lack of steady needle operation.
Being an engineer with an inventive turn of mind,Old Compass he discovered and patented the production method for a much steadier needle, better readings and a new level of accuracy.
In 1950’s Suunto was producing both field compasses and marine compasses, and the company was exporting compasses to over 50 countries around the world, including Canada and the United States. In 1952 Helsinki was hosting the Olympic Games, and the torches carried to light the Olympic flame were Suunto products. The first marine compass, Suunto K-12, was launched onto the market in 1953. Couple of years later, in 1957, Suunto started manufacturing hypsometers, which measure the height of trees.
In 1960’s the compass range grew further, and Suunto introduced its first diving compass – initiated by the divers themselves. A British sports diver attached a Suunto compass to his wrist, and found that the device also worked underwater. Thanks to his feedback and initiatives, the new business category was found!
In the following years Suunto’s exports and business grew steadily. Suunto focused on combining its strength in precision mechanics with new skills in electronics. Accuracy, reliability, and ruggedness have been Suunto’s key values from the very beginning of the company history.
In 1987 saw the appearance of what was later to prove the seed of much of the company’s later growth, with the start of mass production of the SME dive computer. Previously, the diver had to calculate the safety duration of a dive and decompression time with help of diving tables. Now, a small computer and its algorithms could help take care of safety.
A dive computer that fits on the wrist, combined with an electronic compass, Suunto Spyder, provided the foundation for Suunto’s next market conquest, the Suunto Vector in 1998. The Suunto Vector wristop computer was designed for outdoor leisure use. It measures air pressure, and therefore altitude, and helps in predicting changes in the weather as well as it displays direction and time.
The Suunto Vector paved the way for the next generation of wristop computers that were developed in the new millennium. In 2004 Suunto introduced Suunto D9, the first unit that combined a dive computer and digital compass.

In the same year Suunto entered a new field with the first training products, the Suunto t6, a heart rate monitor which gives sports laboratory –quality measurements on training and its effects on the user’s fitness. The Suunto t6 was followed with the whole series of training products in 2006 and thus the company entered more deeply into the fitness category.
In 2007 Suunto introduced a new series of Outdoor sports instruments: Suunto Core and Suunto Lumi. The Suunto Core combines the Suunto heritage with a contemporary design direction and offers the advanced ABC – altimeter, D9barometer and compass – functions. Suunto Lumi is the first female outdoor instrument specifically made for women and also designed by women. Both products have been very successful in international design competitions: Suunto Core was awarded by the reddot Best of the Best nomination and Suunto Lumi both reddot design award and if design award in 2008.
Suunto HelO2 dive computer was brought onto the market early 2009. It is the first dive computer from Suunto with full mixed gas capability. The dive computer is designed specifically for technical divers – divers who use multiple gases such as trimix, nitrox and oxygen to go deeper for longer exploring wreck and caves, for example.
Suunto’s first premium sports watch collection, Suunto Elementum, was introduced in spring 2009. The Suunto Elementum is a watch for the urbanites: active city dwellers with interest inElementum sailing, diving and outdoor activities, who value the combination of style and function.
Today, Suunto is a leading designer and manufacturer of sports instruments for training, diving, mountaineering, hiking, skiing, sailing and golf. Prized for their design, accuracy and dependability, Suunto sports instruments combine the aesthetics and functionality of watches with sport-specific computers that help athletes at all levels analyze and improve performance. Headquartered in Vantaa, Finland, Suunto employs more than 500 people worldwide and distributes its products to over 100 countries. The company is a subsidiary of Helsinki-based Amer Sports Corporation with the sister brands Wilson, Salomon, Atomic, Precor, Arc’teryx and Mavic.
