Swiss Watch manufacturing since 1919

Oskar Kessler acquired a lot of professional experience as a watchmaker employed by famous watch companies. In 1919, he fulfilled his many years dream and founded his own company named WEGA.

In 1954 he moved to the new impressing factory and produced wrist- and pocket watches which were sold all over the world. All mechanical movements had been assembled in house and passed strict quality controls.

In workshops, more than 100 employees with a lot of professional know-how and feeling brought life into the small marvels. A network of outworkers in Grenchen supported the success of the enterprise.

All rough movements mainly had been provided by A. Schild Ltd. Movements such as AS 1250 with “hammer-winding”, and AS 1361 with “rotor-winding” bear witness to important technical innovations at that time.

The first launched waterproof watches had helped considerably to establish the brand name in Eastern Europe markets. The most famous movement was AS 1130 with small second hand. The most requested watch, the “Wehrmachtsuhr”, was sold by
quantities of many 10’000 pieces to Argentina, Chile and Columbia etc. In the years of 50ies and 60ies more than 100’000 watches were yearly delivered in many countries all over the world.

MY MOST PRECIOUS COLLECTION - HARWOOD FIRST AUTOMATIC WRISTWATCH

The Harwood wristwatch is a rare and wonderful creation, many are compared with the older Rolex watches that even today are so elegant in their design. Created by John Harwood, who set up shop in the Isle of Man in 1922, these watches have a design feature way ahead of their time.

Most Harwood wristwatches have a feature that will escape many at first glance - but closer examination will reveal, or not reveal as the case may be, a missing watch winding stem. Harwood considered that watches were prone to the ingress of dust, which they certainly were due to inadequately sealed cases. He therefore began work on a conversion of a standard Swiss wound mechanism, removing the stem wind and adding an automatic winding device. Turning the bezel allowed the hands to be set.

As Harwood progressed with his invention and his watches became smaller and more refined, he set out to find a financial backer to expand production. Unfortunately most companies did not see any real benefit in the design feature and production was delayed until he approached the Fortis watch making company. Walter Vogt showed a real interest and so it was that the Harwood wristwatch began production in 1926.

As with many watch manufacturers of the time, a worldwide depression caused sever economic hardship and Harwood was certainly affected but kept on designing and manufacturing new models. Surviving the period was another indication of the company's tenacity.

The Harwood wristwatch is still made today by the Harwood watch co, based in Switzerland and distributed through a large retail supplier base. If you are looking for a watch that is different then you can't get much more different than this. Great for collectors of fine watches.

The Unitas 6325 is a truely nice large men's movement with a diameter of 13 lignes, which is very flat and thus does not have a shock protection for the large and light nickel balance. It impresses visually by its red-golden tone.

In this movement, 17 jewels are used, four of them as deck jewels, which help achieving good precision results and contained a pair of Incabloc shock protections.

The Unitas 6325 is a late bloomer and was probably made in the 1960ies. It already uses the modern beating rate of 21600A/h and the modern shape of the nickel balance, which is used until today, but on the other hand, the seconds are displayed on a subseconds display at "6" like on vintage watches.

BRIEF HISTORY OF BENRUS, SOVEREIGN AND BELFORTE WATCHES

Although the company went out of business in 1977, large numbers of their well made and dependable fine Benrus watches are available as vintage collectors’ items.

Way back in 1921 three brothers called Oscar, Ralph and Benjamin Lazrus founded the Benrus Watch Company. History doesn’t tell us why Benjamin was the brothers’ name that was chosen but the company name, Benrus, is a combination of the first syllable of his name and the second syllable of their family name. Benrus watches is sometimes mistaken for a Swiss watch making company because early in its history the American owned and operated company leased one floor of factory space from a Swiss owned watch making company that was located in La Chaux de Fonds in Switzerland. Their reason for doing this was to help to circumvent the draconian regulations against the use of Swiss watch movements in foreign time pieces. The earliest models of Benrus watches featured precision movements made by the Schild Company, a well known and established Swiss watch maker. The first watch casings from the Benrus Watch Company are not marked with their brand name due to the Swiss regulations discussed previously.

In the decade of the 1930’s the innovative and creative styling of Benrus watches started to attract quite a following. Their chic designs featured such innovations as cushion watches and rectangular shaped watch casings. It was during this period of time that the Benrus Watch Company first became well known to the American consumer market. The company continued to be known as a leader in style and design in the watch making industry. During the 1940’s they made a range of fine time pieces that are avidly sought after by vintage watch collectors today. Perhaps the most famous of these was the manually winding calendar watch.

Other brands that sold under the Benrus name were

SOVEREIGN

BELFORTE

In the 1960's through the late 70's, Benrus made military issue watches used by the Army and Navy. These were issued to servicemen fighting in the Vietnam War.

Early in the 1960's Ben and Ralph Lazrus were in their 70's and ready for retirement. By the mid to late 70's Benrus Incorporated was a diversified manufacturer of a number of consumer products. Companies included: Benrus Watch Co. Watches, Wells, Inc. Jewelry, and Destino, Ltd. - Christian Dior Products. An attempt to consolidate all the various manufacturing enterprises under one roof proved to be a much more expensive move than anyone calculated, and a final blow to the company which subsequently filed bankrupt in 1977.

The company was then sold, and after passing through several more hands, came under the ownership of the Hampden Company, which also owned "Fantasy Diamonds", with factories in both the Virgin Islands and Chicago. An attempt was made to bring back the Benrus brand under Hampden/Fantasy, which was somewhat successful but short lived. Among others, a reissue of Vietnam service watches proved very popular.

PERSONAL COLLECTION ~ JAEGER LECOUTURE ATMOSPHORIC MANTLE CLOCK

1960'S Lecoultre Atmos Swiss Clock 528-6. Really nice clock and looks so shiny and beautiful! Serial Number 171402 puts it early 1960's. Finish is bright and clear with only a few minor scuffs or spots that are mostly noticeable at close inspection. There is a teeny tiny rough spot on the upper back side corner that I only noticed upon up close and personal inspection. It is very hard to detect and nobody would even see it, but I had to mention it. Since I have been testing it ON 10.12.2010, it has been working and keeping proper time.

The ATMOS as manufactured by Jaeger LeCoultre, the makers of world famous Reverso wrist watches, is a time piece that for generations has represented the wonders of science, technology and remarkable Swiss craftsmanship. Possessing one signifies belonging to an exclusive group of world leaders, famous celebrities, business professionals, and, put more simply, people with exquisite taste.

ATMOS - The breathtaking clock that lives on air!

People often search for the one special item that will make their home or office stand out, without seeming to be too pretentious or requiring the spending of a fortune. How many absurd pieces of junk have found their way into fine homes based upon some trendy concept of art deco or post modernism? The Atmos is a counterweight to all of that. It is the answer to that endless quest. It is a marvel of technology that also will shine of refinement and grace.

Jean Lebet, the head engineer in the ATMOS division in the LeCoultre factory in Switzerland recalls in his book, "I subsequently discovered that everyone who comes to know it is captivated by its charm! Some are taken by the serene movement of its balance, others by the equilibrium of its shape, others again by the technical challenge that it has required and finally there are those who love it for reasons that escape logical analysis. You cannot explain charm and some people even say that it can be dangerous to try to explain the inexplicable!" (from Lebet, "Living On Air, History Of The Atmos Clock", (c) 1997)

The story of the ATMOS is a fascinating one. Centuries ago the great Leonardo Da Vinci demonstrated the physical impossibility of constructing a perpetual motion device. However, scientists and artisans of many nationalities have always tried continually to do so anyway. In 1928 a French engineer named Jean-Leon Reutter constructed a clock driven quite literally by the air. This device captured the imagination of many of his contemporary clock makers. After extensive development, Jaeger LeCoultre, a famous watch and clock maker in its own right, perfected and patented the perpetual motion Atmos clock and began marketing it world wide.

The technological concept is a remarkable one. Inside a sealed capsule, a mixture of gas and liquid expands as the temperature rises and contracts as it falls, moving the capsule back and forth like a tiny unseen accordion. This motion is used to constantly wind the mainspring thus enabling the clock to run and keep perfect time. A small temperature variation of just one degree is sufficient for over two day's operation. Such variation occurs naturally in normal room temperature and thus without any additional sources of energy, the Atmos clock will continue to run, if left untouched, "forever".

The Atmos is the ultimate environmentally friendly device, there are no batteries to throw away, no electrical consumption of any kind to consider. But this is no quartz clock, the Atmos is a precision device of the first order. To convert the small amount of energy that comes from the air, everything inside the Atmos is made to be virtually frictionless and runs as smoothly and as quietly as is humanly possible. The power consumed by a 15 watt light bulb could run over 60 million Atmos clocks simultaneously!

The parts inside the Atmos are also virtually wear free, thus an Atmos can expect an operational service life of over 600 years, although with today's air pollution, an overhaul and cleaning is recommended every 20 years or so. The Atmos will be the heirloom that you will treasure in your lifetime and leave to future generations for their own enjoyment and appreciation.

In these days of mass production, every Atmos is still made in Switzerland entirely by hand. A single Atmos clock takes a month to produce and then undergoes another 5 weeks of trial and adjustment before leaving the factory in the Vallée De Joux located in the Swiss Jura Mountains. Atmos is thus a rare, hard to find item.

Admirers of advanced technology are not the only ones who get their money's worth. Connoisseurs of elegant forms, precious materials and traditional craftsmanship do so as well. For decades the Government of Switzerland has been presenting its distinguished guests with this masterpiece of Swiss artistry, it is the pride and joy of the Swiss clock making industry. The Atmos has had the honor of being associated with great statesmen, royalty and other renowned people including President John F. Kennedy, Sir Winston Churchill, General Charles De Gaulle, President Ronald Reagan, Pope John Paul II, King Hussein of Jordan and many others.
