BRIEF HISTORY OF LeGant Wrsitwatch

LeGant is a trademark used by Montgomery Ward department stores for watches produced under contract for sale in their chain.

The watches were initially made in Switzerland, and will bear 'Swiss Made' on their dials and movements. Some models, such as the 'QS' were early 'electric' watches, not to be confused with 'electronic' watches, and were an evolutionary step between classic mechanical watches and modern quartz electronic watches. These movements utilized a balance wheel mechanism for timekeeping, as do fine mechanical watches, both vintage and modern. However, the watches were powered by battery (rather than the coiled mainspring to store power, as done in mechanical watches). This hybrid electro-mechanical movement helped to overcome the problem of extremely short battery life in the first electric watches.

The Le Gant name was sold to Seiko in the early 1990's and watches from that era specify 'Japan Mov't', etc. Production was later ceased

DUGENA - 100 years history. The roots of the German watch brand DUGENA date back to the 'Union Horlogere', a guild founded by watchmakers in Switzerland in 1900. Some 17 years later, the watch factories in Biel-Genf-Glashutte merged with the united Glashutten ALPINA, which shortly afterwards set up a branch in Germany under the name of 'Alpina Deutsche Uhrmachergenossenschaft' (Alpina German watchmaker's guild).

The circle in the triangle. - The watchmaker's sign of quality. The name 'DUGENA German watchmakers guild' appears for the first time in 1942 in Berlin, when it was decided to change the name Alpina to DUGENA.. Ever since, the circle in the triangle has been the DUGENA logo - the watchmaker's sign for quality in Germany.

Tradition and innovation, skilfully united. Today, the brand-name DUGENA combines watchmakers quality with modern design, and offers not only the popular DUGENA ornament watches but also fashionable sports watches and jewellery.

Brief Information on PUW Movement

PUW stands for Pforzheimer Uhrenwerke (Pforzheim Movements). Pforzheim is one of the cities in Germany, where watchmaking has a strong and long tradition. PUW made a lot of mechanical and quartz movements in the 70ies and 80ies and was very popular. Today PUW is owned by Swatch Group.

BRIEF HISTORY OF ORIS WATCHES

Oris was founded in 1904 by Paul Cattin and Georges Christian at Hölstein, Switzerland. Oris produced no-nonsense time pieces which were both high quality and affordable. With the advent of quartz, as with many other Swiss watch manufacturers, Oris struggled to find its place in the watch market.

However, Oris continued to focus on the manufacturing of mechanical watches. Oris has been able to hold its own creating watches with unique mechanical features that distinguish from those with electronics and quartz. Since the mid-eighties, Oris has progressively launched more mechanical watches with features such as analogue date pointers, automatic movement, mechanical chronographs, and analogue world time display. Interestingly, despite the turbulent changes the watch industry experienced, Oris has found itself doing what it always has, producing great value quality mechanical watches.

In 2004, Oris celebrated 100 years of existence and is going stronger than ever. Oris boasts many names wearing an Oris such as Sean Penn, Harrison Ford, Gwyneth Paltrow, Nicolas Cage, and Meg Ryan. Oris is also a key sponsor of the BMW Williams Formula 1 team, helping them to grow their brand awareness, and expand internationally.

The 2008 Oris range includes the TT3, Divers, Artelier, BC3, BC4, Big Crown, Miles, Chronoris, Classic and Flight Timer collections.
