In Locle, one of the most important watch centers in Switzerland, located in the mountains of the Jura on the 18th of January 1894, 8 o'clock in the morning on a Thursday, the company "Universal Watch" was founded. The two watch manufacturers Numa-Emile Descombes (born at Locle in 1863) and Ulysse Georges Perret (born at Locle in 1868) registered the name "Universal Watch" at the rue du Collège for the "production of watch-cases, domes, watch dials, movement, fitted boxes and packaging for watches". This was a classical formula at that time, which enabled the protection of the make and all related promotional material. In the same year they patented a 24 hour indication watch. Just three years later Numa-Emile Descombes died at the early age of 34. Consequently on the 22nd July 1897, all makes were transferred to the names of Ulysse Georges Perret and Louis-Edouard Berthoud.
Universal Watch was amongst the first to recognize the enormous potential of wrist-watches and chronographs in particular. In 1898 superior quality wrist-watches with chronograph and 30 minutes recorder were introduced. During the following years the brand "Universal Watch" profitted from rapidly growing reputation in Europe and the two Americas. The company decided to move the headquarter to Geneva, rue de l'Arquebuse in 1919. Research on self-winding systems for wrist-watches was undertaken. In 1925 Universal created the model "Auto-Rem", a self-winding system with an oscillating weight mechanism with spring-buffers, similar to the system of John Harwood. On the 12th of August 1933 Georges Perret died. The management of the company was taken by his son Raoul. Supported by new investors the company changed to "Universal Watch Co Ltd. Genève" in 1934. During the same year the first chronograph wrist-watch with two push-buttons was presented. In 1935 the company moved to 43, Rue du Rhône with an entrance at the famous Grand Quai, next to Patek Philippe. The name "Universal" was registered. Parallel to this, a chronograph with an additional 12 hour register was presented as a world premiere.

With the registration of the brand "Universal Genève" a new logo was introduced in 1937. Despite of the world-wide economic depression, the models "Compur" and "Compax" were such a great success, that the factory in Geneva could no longer meet the demand. As a result a chronograph factory was opened in Pont-de-Martel in 1941. The famous "Tri-Compax" model was presented in 1944. Selling watches all around the world, Universal was getting a synonym for quality, reliability and good taste. Louis-Edouard Berthoud died on the 3rd March of 1947 just before the introduction of the new precision automatic calibre 138 with an oscillating mass with single direction winding. Shortly after the inauguration of the new factory in Geneva on the 28th of April 1954 the model "Polarouter", later on renamed to "Polerouter", was presented. The watch, fitted with above mentioned movement, was used by the SAS crews during their polar flights. On the 2nd of March 1955 Universal Genève patented the calibre 215 "Microtor", a new form of an automatic calibre with the rotor mass incorporated in the movement.
Since the first chronograph wrist watches, Universal's endeavour was to combine quality with good classic taste. The make had many admirer, from Harry Truman to Juan Peron. The artist Jean Cocteaux composed the dedication "Les temps lui-meme regarde l'heure à la montre Universal", which can be found on the dials of the new tourbillons. Various sheiks and arabic ministers ordered luxurious custom made watches. Golden watches with exquisite enamel dials are still very sought after. Gerald Genta, considered to be one of the most famous watch designers of the twentieth century, contributed to the success of this make by, designing two models which have subsequently become world-famous: the "Polerouter" in 1954 and the "Golden Shadow" in 1966. These two watches gained Universal the "New York Diamond Award", the "Golden Rose" in Baden-Baden, the Grand Prix of the "Ville de Genève", the "Città di Basilea" prize and the 1st price in the "Exposition Nationale Suisse" in 1964.

BRIEF HISTORY OF HAMILTON WATCHES
Founded in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, in 1892. Hamilton Produced its first watch in 1893, designed by H.J. Cain, one of the company's founding members.
1893 Hamilton introduces "The Broadway Limited", a railroad watch that was dubbed "the watch of Railroad accuracy". Initially manufactured to provide the country's railroads with reliable timing devices, the Hamilton railroad pocket watch was adopted as the official watch of the American Expeditionary Forces worldwide. A wrist watch version of the railroad watch was issued to General Pershing and his doughboys in WWI, accompanied Admiral Byrd on his expeditions to the North and South Poles, served the Picards well on their first balloon ascent into the stratosphere, and was on the wrist of the first American to scale Mount Everest.
1928 The Yankees win the world series. Hamilton introduces the Yankee Watch, establishing it as a leader in watch design. Hamilton helped America keep pace with the energy of a new lifestyle. New Hamilton designs, such as the Yankee and the Piping Rock, projected the independant spirit of the day.
1930 Hamilton continues to capture the soaring spirit of the 1930's. The world turns to the skies as commercial aviation takes off. Hamilton soon becomes the official timepiece of the most famous industry leaders --- TWA, Eastern, United and Northwest.
1940 WWII Hamilton stops production of watches for consumers and creates new timepieces exclusively for military use. Close to one million Hamilton military watches are produced. Today, the 'Hack' has become very collectible among watch and military collectors.
1957 Hamilton's leadership in engineering and innovation creates a significant breakthrough in timekeeping. Hamilton introduces the first electric watch in 1957. The Ventura becomes an instant success. See "Hamilton Electric"

THE BRIEF HISTORY OF MICHEL HERBELIN WATCHES
The Michel Herbelin story began in 1947 in Charquemont, France in the heart of the Jura mountains - the home of watchmaking since the 18th century. Michel Herbelin was a passionate believer in traditional fine watchmaking and decided to make a stand against the new mass production techniques that were looming on the horizon and threatening to oust the old techniques.
In 1947, Michel Herbelin set up his own company with the avowed intention of making watches of the highest quality, to the same standards as the great names of the day. Herbelin worked in close collaboration with his suppliers and with the specialist laboratories in the region to come up with elegant, technically sophisticated creations that provided the basis for his burgeoning reputation. With the appearance of the company's logo in 1965, the Herbelin name became a well-known brand.
In 1972, Michel’s son, Jean-Claude Herbelin joined the company. The advent of quartz technology provided a boost for Michel’s creative instincts resulting in innovations noted by the watch industry such as extra slim watches and the wire bangle watches for which the brand became synonymous. When Jean-Claude took over as head of the company upon his father’s retirement, he steered the brand into a new phase, developing a brand image based on creativity and attention to detail through worldwide communication campaigns.
Today, the company is still run by Jean-Claude Herbelin and his brother Pierre-Michel. Now with a third generation of Herbelin family members involved in the company, Michel Herbelin is truly one of the only Independent watch manufacturers of note in existence. Michel Herbelin is an international brand and produces over 150,000 watches per year which are exported to over 50 countries worldwide. The brand is positioned in the middle of the market with the majority of the collection retailing from £250-£1000. In France, the brand is market leader in the mid market segment. Its biggest export markets are South Africa, Germany and the United Kingdom. In the UK and Republic of Ireland, Michel Herbelin is stocked by a strong network of over 350 leading quality jewellers.
Designed and made in France, all watches have Swiss movements. The brand therefore benefits from the flair of French design with the precision of Swiss engineering - hence the company's advertising tag line: Swiss Heart, French Soul.
The collection is split into three main categories: Sport, Classic and Boutique watches. Within each category, there are distinctive "families". The flagship collection, which can be found within the Sport category is NEWPORT. Inspired by the sea, the collection takes its name from the America’s cup and the race to Newport Rhode Island. All Newport watches are water resistant to at least 5 Atmospheres and are fitted with a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal.
The Classic collection is the epitome of French style and good design. The main family groups are KHARGA - distinctive with their rectangular cases and elegant lines and AMBASSADOR – stylish yet understated.
The Boutique collection consists of a variety of stylish models that can literally be worn as a piece of jewellery that tells the time. Ranging from elegant bangle watches, to delicate bracelet versions and colourful strap models there is a watch to suit every taste and wrist. The main family groups within the Boutique collection are ANTARES, LUNA and SALAMBO.

Cartier was founded in Paris in 1847 by Louis-François Cartier when he took over the workshop of his master. In 1874, his son Alfred Cartier took over the administration of the company, but it was Alfred's sons louis, Piere and Jacques, who were responsible for establishing the worldwide brand name of Cartier.
The story of the Cartier House's popularity began with Louis Cartier invention of the wristwatch for his renowned friend, a Brazilian aviator, Alberto Santos Dumont, in March of 1904 after Alberto Santos-Dumont complained of the unreliability and impracticality of using pocket watches while flying to his friend Louis Cartier. The watch created by Louis Cartier for his friend featured a leather band and a small buckle, a flat wristwatch with a distinctive square bezel that made it possible to wear it on the wrist. Having received this precious gift, Santos-Dumont would never take off again without this Cartier wristwatch and used it for checking the time during flights. . This watch was not only a hit with Santos-Dumont, but also with Cartier's many clients. Thus, out of this timeless design, the "Santos" was born. This was the first men's wristwatch (Patek Phillipe made the first wristwatch, but for a woman and as a one-off).
In 1907, Cartier signed a contract with Edmond Jaeger, who agreed to exclusively supply the movements for Cartier watches. By this time, Cartier had branches in London, New York and St. Petersburg and was quickly becoming one of the most successful watch companies in the world. The introduction of the Baignoire and Tortue models (both of which are still in production today) took place in 1912, followed by the Tank model's debut in 1917. The Cartier tank model, designed by Louis Cartier, was inspired from the newly introduced war machines on the Western Front. This line too has survived, with over thirty varieties now being made since.
In the early 1920s Cartier formed a joint company with Edward Jaeger (of Jaeger- LeCoutre ) to produce movements solely for Cartier. Thus was the European watch & clock company born, although Cartier continued to use movements from other great makers. Cartier watches can be found with movements from Vancheron Constatin, Audemars-Piguet, Movado and LeCoutre. It was also during this period that Cartier began adding its own reference numbers to the watches it sold, usually by stamping a four-digit code on the underside of a lug. Jacques took charge of the London operation and eventually moved to the current address at New Bond Street.
The present day designers use Louis Cartier's ideas and developments as an inexhaustible source of inspiration. Appealing shapes and designs, movements from the high horology world are reflected in the Santos, the Panther, the Pasha, the Tonneau, and the Tank, Cartier watch collections that give just a few of examples of Cartier's shining talent.

Zenith was founded in 1865 in Le Locle, Switzerland by a 22-year-old clockmaker named Georges Favre-Jacot. Unlike competitors at the time, Zenith made its own movements. By 1875, Zenith employed almost a third of the town’s population to manufacture its pocket watches.
Acclaim for the company's products came fairly q...uickly. There was a gold medal at the Swiss National Exhibition in 1896, followed by a first prize for chronometers at a Neuchâtel Observatory competition in 1903. By the 1920's, Zenith had introduced its first wristwatches, which were cased in gold and reflected the Art Deco sensibility of the day.
Despite significant global disturbances such as the Great Depression in the 1930's and World War II, production increased until the 1950's, when Zenith was one of the unquestioned leaders in Swiss watchmaking (in that decade, its calibers won prizes from the Neuchâtel Observatory five years in a row).
A typical vintage Zenith dress wristwatch from 1955 had an 18k rose gold case, a silver dial, and a hand-stitched black patent alligator strap. Inside was a 135 caliber, manual-movement chronometer, which at the time was state of the art.
Sports models such as the Pilot, designed to compete with the Rolex Explorer, appeared in the 1960's, but the biggest news of that decade was the 1969 launch of Zenith’s El Primero chronograph movement. Watches from this era with this movement inside are among the most collectible vintage Zenith wristwatches available.
Work on this marvel of watchmaking (150 individual stamps were required to manufacture all its tiny parts) had begun in 1962. Despite subsequent advances in technology, El Primero remains the only integrated chronograph caliber with automatic winding in both directions, and the only mechanical movement to vibrate at a rate of 36,000 beats per hour, making it accurate to within a tenth of a second.
Zenith has a long reputation for the quality and precision of their watches, with 1,565 1st-place precision awards to date. Zenith, is one of the few Swiss watch brands that make their own mechanical movements - the Elite (standard movement) and the El Primero (chronograph). The El Primero movement has a frequency of 36,000 alternations per hour. This high rate allows a resolution of 1/10th of a second and a potential for greater positional accuracy over the more typical chronometer frequency of 28,000 alt per hour.Ironically, at the same time that Zenith introduced it's greatest movement, quartz arrived to the watch world, an invention that would almost destroy the traditional swiss watch industry in the subsequent years. Zenith takes on the quartz challenge, preserving its precious tooling and waiting for the inevitable comeback of the mechanical movements. While many watch manufacturers ceased to exist during this rough years, Zenith was able to persist in part thanks to supplying its El Primero movement to other prestigious watch makers, the most famous being the Rolex Daytona.
The turn of the century saw Zenith reinvent itself and modernize its timepieces. In 2002 at the Basel watch fair, Zenith launched 4 new movements and 14 new models that represented an overwhelming 52 new variations. There have been several innovations made by Zenith in the 2000's and many new models have been launched. Currently, Zenith has been launching a collection of sport-chic watches entitled DEFY, and are further progressing the modernity of their timepieces.
Zenith was purchased by luxury giant LVMH (Louis Vuitton Moet Hennesy) in November 1999, becoming one of several brands in LVMH's watch and jewelry division.
Presently, Zenith markets five watch lines, including the Chronomaster, Class, Port-Royal, Vintage, Defy, Star and the all new Omnipotence.
