HISTORY OF TAG HEUER MONACO

The TAG Heuer Monaco (originally Heuer Monaco) is a series of automatic chronograph wristwatch originally introduced by Heuer in 1969 in honour of the Monaco Grand Prix. The Monaco was revolutionary for being the first automatic as well as the first square cased chronograph. The  Holywood film star Steve McQueen used the watch to accessorize his character in the 1971 film Le Mans. In the decades after his death the use of film stills has made the watch synonymous with McQueen. Although it was discontinued in the mid-1970s, the Monaco was reissued with a new design in 1998 and was reintroduced again with an entirely new mechanisms in 2003 in response to McQueen's increasing popularity.
The Design
The watch typically features a pair of pushbuttons at the 2 and 4 o’clock position. The dials for the minute and hour counters are at 9 and 3 o'clock respectively. There is a hand-applied date window at 6 o’clock. The watch also features diamond-tipped horizontal hours indexes. In the original version, the crown is located at the 9 o'clock position on a square casing. The shape was revolutionary at the time for a chronograph watch.
Early versions came with two different colour schemes. The first (represented by the letter B at the end of the reference code) had a metallic blue dial with white registers. The other (represented by the letter G) had a metallic gray dial and registers. The G model is less popular with collectors.
Model CW2111
The Monaco was reintroduced in 2003, with an entirely new mechanism and a 7-row steel bracelet of square links. This model runs on a Calibre 17 mechanism. As with all other models in production at the time, this version features the current logo, rather than the old "HEUER" logo of the previous re-edition.

The TAG Heuer company has its roots in 1860 when Edouard Heuer founded Uhrenmanufaktur Heuer AG in St-Imier, Switzerland, patenting his first chronograph in 1882. In 1887 Heuer patented an 'oscillating pinion' still used by major watchmakers for mechanical chronographs.
Formation
TAG Heuer was formed in 1985 when TAG (Techniques d'Avant Garde), manufacturers of high-tech items such as ceramic turbochargers for Formula One cars, acquired Heuer.
On 13 September 1999 TAG Heuer accepted a bid from LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton S.A. of SwFr1.15 billion (£452.15 million) (US$739 million) contingent upon a transfer of 50.1% of stocks.

First produced in 1984 and manufactured for 15+ years, the "super pro" is a carryover from the pre-TAG days at Heuer (TAG acquired Heuer in 1985) when they were still a respected manufacturer of professional grade timekeeping instruments. It is considered by many the last professional grade dive watch offered by the company.

Pictured at the top of the page are catalog reference numbers 840.006-2 (right) and WS2110-2 (left). 840.006-2 is the earlier of the two, probably from the '90s. WS2110-2 uses the later TAG HEUER numbering system and dates to approx 2000. Both watches are otherwise identical. The reference numbers (found on the back side of the case) identify both as the larger "second generation" style case. The earlier generation watches are identified by ref number 840.006 (without the -2). These cases are slightly smaller and have a more rounded profile.

Electro-Mechanical Movements - (Hybrid Electro-Mechanical Movement)
A disruptive innovation: The Calibre S:
The TAG Heuer Calibre S is a mechanical movement with the sophistication and complexity of quartz precision. The electro mechanical "true hybrid" timepiece combines the precision of quartz technology with an ingenious mix of mechanical watchmaking expertise. With no fewer than 250 mechanical components and five bi-directional micro-engine, the Calibre S is the first new generation of analog timepieces to be developed for several centuries.
Display:
TAG Hauer is known for its sophisticated technology and design. For the Calibre S the technology was greatly inspired by sports car instruments. Just like the sports car dashboard it uses a similar 160° dials and bidirectional micro-motors.
