     HISTORY OF BUT WATCHES

BUT (or Buttes Watch / BWC / Butex) is a Swiss brand from the Buttes Watch Co. (Fabrique d’Horlogerie Buttes Watch), a maker based in the small village of Buttes in the Val de Travers, Canton of Neuchâtel. It specialized in good-quality watches and especially chronographs, which it sold under the names BUT, BWC, and Butex.

Origins

•  The roots go back to Henri (“Alexandre”) Jeannin-Rosselet, who established a watchmaking factory in nearby Fleurier in 1894. He produced “English-style” and especially “Chinese-style” watches (a Fleurier specialty).

•  In 1901 he moved the factory to Buttes. By 1910 the firm was known as H. Jeannin-Rosselet et Cie, Buttes Watch, and the BWC trademark was registered. Wristwatch production began around 1915 with various calibers (lever and cylinder escapements, sizes from about 14 to 21 lines).
