HISTORY OF TITUS WRISTWATCHES

Paul Ditisheim (1868-1945), a well-known watchmaker and inventor, was an extremely prominent figure in the Swiss watch industry of his time. In 1887, he named one of the initial models he created, Titus, and thus the brand Solvil et Titus was born. Solvil, an abbreviation of Sonvilier, is the Jura village in which a factory for making watch components stood and Titus was a highly talented and skilled Roman Emperor of the first century. Ditisheim was immensely interested in researching and manufacturing chronometers, and was extremely successful at it, demonstrated by the fact that his products hold records for precision as deemed by the prestigious international trials carried out by the Royal Observatories of Kew-Teddington and Neuchâtel. His products ranged greatly from navigational-purposed watches to chronometers with automatic display of sunrise and sunset time to the minute each day; from watches with perpetual calendars to ones that could strike and incorporated chimes, from chronometers with equations of time to many others with many complicated features.
Marketed under approximately thirty brands, all of these chronometers and watches substantiated his creativity, skill and innovational abilities.

In 1930, Ditisheim handed Solvil et Titus over to Paul-B. Vogel, who foresaw the necessities of broadening the market for watches and of creating an international distribution system. As the demand for exclusive articles was being overtaken by the mass market demand and assisted by the fact that the Swiss watch industry made impressive progress after World War Two, Solvil et Titus expanded. This meant an approach consisting of more dynamic commercial methods as well as a revolution in watch conception and manufacturing.Between 1950 and 1970, the watch market developed rapidly throughout the world. In 1963, the Société des Garde-Temps S.A (SGT) was created, and Solvil et Titus became one of the members of this important group. New geographic, sociological and economic markets started to appear and in the 70s, Solvil et

Titus was made available in the Asian market. Solvil et Titus launched its first series of romantic TV commercials in 1988, starring diva Anita Mui. Evoking a love story set in old Shanghai, the debut campaign promoted a watch line based on the theme of antiquity and proved immensely successful. As a result, sales of Solvil et Titus watches skyrocketed, with the brand becoming a symbol of romantic expression. Even today, the Chinese advertising slogan “天長地久” (translated as "Love lost is perhaps the love that remains with you for all time”) is widely remembered. The Solvil et Titus brand image was reinforced and enhanced by a further series of extremely compelling and moving advertisements. Featuring superstars such as Dave Wang Chieh, Chow Yun Fat and Andy Lau as well as world-renowned footballer Ryan Giggs, they have become classics of Hong Kong’s advertising industry.

After its success in Hong Kong, Solvil et Titus expanded its sales and marketing activities to Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Taiwan and Mainland China. Since then, Solvil et Titus has become a popular watch brand throughout the region.Nevertheless, the public’s attitude towards love was influenced by changes taking place in the society. People were more reluctant to make a commitment to a lifelong love. As a trendy brand, Solvil et Titus redefined its brand image and adopted a new slogan “Follow My Own Time” to appeal to the independent nature of the modern society.

Tenor Dolly Watch is one of the coolest designs featuring a robust Tenor-Dorly 1393 calibre. The TD1393 movement is more complicated than an average automatic direct read from the 1970's but the various designs available prove that it must have been pretty popular among watch producers. It was sold under different brands such as Tenor-Dorly, TD, Waltham, Technos, Sempertalis, Dynasty or even the top-shelf Universal Geneve. Gunmetal or blackchrome versions are uncommon and have been very likely custom modified.

OMEGA SEAMASTER AND JAMES BOND MOVIE
Omega has been associated with James Bond movies since 1995. That year Pierce Brosnan took over the role of James Bond and began wearing the Omega Seamaster Quartz Professional (model 2541.80.00) in the movie GoldenEye. In all later films, Brosnan wore an Omega Seamaster Professional Chronometer (model 2531.80.00). The producers wanted to update the image of the fictional "super-spy" to a more distinctly sophisticated "Euro" look.
Another possible reason for the change from the Rolex Submariner that Bond had previously worn was a change in the business environment surrounding modern high-profile films and product placement. Omega was eager to participate in high profile co-promotions/product placement opportunities, especially the James Bond franchise, to further its brand image/awareness. It accomplished this by supplying products and finance (something that the conservative Rolex company avoids, presumably because it sees no benefit for itself).
For the 40th anniversary of James Bond (2002) a commemorative edition of the watch was made available model 2537.80.00 (10,007 units). The watch is identical to the model 2531.80.00 except the blue watch dial had a 007 logo inscribed across it and also machined into the caseback. The band also had 007 inscribed on the clasp.
Daniel Craig, the current James Bond of Casino Royale, and Quantum of Solace also wears the Omega Seamaster: the Seamaster Planet Ocean (model 2900.50.91) in the first part of Casino Royale, and the Seamaster Professional 300M (model 2220.80.00) in the latter part (from travelling to Montenegro). He even goes so far as to mention Omega by name when questioned by Vesper Lynd. In connection with the launch of the film, Omega released an 007-special of the Professional 300M, featuring the 007-gun logo on the second hand and the rifle pattern on the watch face, this being a stylized representation of the gunbarrel sequence of Bond movies.
Omega released a second James Bond limited edition watch in 2006. This was a Seamaster Planet Ocean model with a limited production of 5007 units. The model is similar to what Craig wears earlier on in the film; however, it has a small orange colored 007 logo on the second hand, an engraved caseback signifying the Bond connection, and an engraved 007 on the clasp. In the newest movie, Quantum of Solace, Craig wears the Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean with a black face and steel braclet (42 mm version). Another limited edition was released featuring the checkered "PPK grip" face with the Quantum of Solace logo over it.
In the 1990’s, the Seamaster became famous for being the watch of choice for James Bond. The Omega brand has had a high profile association with the James Bond movies since 1995, when Pierce Brosnan took over the role of James Bond in the movie GoldenEye and began wearing the Omega Seamaster Quartz Professional (model 2541.80.00). In all later films, Brosnan wore an Omega Seamaster Professional Chronometer (model 2531.80.00).

Which Seamaster watch is the James Bond watch?

The Seamaster Professional Diver 300 M was worn by James Bond in five Bond movies. These Seamasters are made of stainless steel on a stainless steel bracelet, fitted with a blue dial, unidirectional rotating bezel with blue ring and a sapphire crystal. They have a diameter of 41 mm and are waterproof to 300 metres. In Casino Royale, before Bond was assigned his 00 status (“license to kill”), he was wearing a Seamaster Planet Ocean with a diameter of 45.5 mm.In Quantum of Solace, James Bond wears a Seamaster Planet Ocean 600 M with OMEGA’s revolutionary Co-axial technology and water resistance to 600 metres (2000 feet). It has a diameter of 42 mm and a dramatic black dial.

BRIEF HISTORY OF HAMILTON WATCHES

Founded in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, in 1892. Hamilton Produced its first watch in 1893, designed by H.J. Cain, one of the company's founding members.

1893 Hamilton introduces "The Broadway Limited", a railroad watch that was dubbed "the watch of Railroad accuracy". Initially manufactured to provide the country's railroads with reliable timing devices, the Hamilton railroad pocket watch was adopted as the official watch of the American Expeditionary Forces worldwide. A wrist watch version of the railroad watch was issued to General Pershing and his doughboys in WWI, accompanied Admiral Byrd on his expeditions to the North and South Poles, served the Picards well on their first balloon ascent into the stratosphere, and was on the wrist of the first American to scale Mount Everest.

1928 The Yankees win the world series. Hamilton introduces the Yankee Watch, establishing it as a leader in watch design. Hamilton helped America keep pace with the energy of a new lifestyle. New Hamilton designs, such as the Yankee and the Piping Rock, projected the independant spirit of the day.

1930 Hamilton continues to capture the soaring spirit of the 1930's. The world turns to the skies as commercial aviation takes off. Hamilton soon becomes the official timepiece of the most famous industry leaders --- TWA, Eastern, United and Northwest.

1940 WWII Hamilton stops production of watches for consumers and creates new timepieces exclusively for military use. Close to one million Hamilton military watches are produced. Today, the 'Hack' has become very collectible among watch and military collectors.

1957 Hamilton's leadership in engineering and innovation creates a significant breakthrough in timekeeping. Hamilton introduces the first electric watch in 1957. The Ventura becomes an instant success. See "Hamilton Electric"

1965 Inspired by the sleek lines of the Cadillac tailfins of the 50's, the Ventura becomes the watch of choice for the icoms of american style. Elvis Presley chooses to wear the Ventura in his movie, 'Blue Hawaii.'

1972 The furure is close at hand and Hamilton shocks the world with a completely new kind of watch. Manufactured at its headquarters in Pennsylvania, Hamilton introduces the world's first digital watch - the Pulsar.

Today, Hamilton s primary collections include the American Classics collection and the Khaki collection, updated versions of the legendary military timepieces of yesteryear. Manufactured at its headquarters in Pennsylvania, Hamilton introduces the world's first digital watch - the Pulsar.

HISTORY OF LONGINES-WITTANAUER WATCHES
As soon as Ernest Francillon opened a small manufacturing plant, which started to produce the following year, the story of Longines started in 1866. Francillon, who was the grandson of Auguste Agassiz (a pioneer of Swiss horology whose name appears on wrist and pocket watches of high-quality), learned his trade at his grandfather's watch assembly shop, the "comptoir". He would finally become director of the shop, but this thirty-two-year old man got acquainted with the limits of the comptoir and the areas in which he would be more likely to have a better production.
The first Longines watches arrived in America in 1868. A few years later, Longines was awarded a gold medal for precision and reliability at the Universal Exposition of Vienna. To prevent himself from imitation, Francillon decided to trademark the dials on his watches with a winged clepsydra and the word "Longines".A clepsydra is an ancient device which measured time by marking the regulated flow of water though a small opening. Looking carefully at the centre of the Longines trademark a small box that represents this device is seen.
The company eventually departed from this procedure fairly quickly because there are several Longines watches that do not have the logo. In 1889, Longines provided five chronometers to the Italian explorer Luigi Amedeo, who did his best to reach the North Pole. His failure is hardly noted in history books, but the mark Longines'illuswtrious history as the watch choice by explores and adventurers.
In 1904, Longines furnished chronometers to a U.S. naval exploration of the North Polar Region. Unfortunately, Robert E. Peary was the first to reach the North Pole in 1909. Longines, unfortunately, missed the chance to be part of that event. At the beginning of 1900s, Longines started to express an interest in gentlemen's wrist watches and joined other Swiss makers which showed the same interest as well.
The Longines Co. states that the first wrist watch was cased in 1905. The first wrist chronographs to appear in the sports market were seen in 1910s. Moreover, Longines produced military watches for World War, some of the, with pierced shrapnel covers, "demi-hunter" cased varieties, and others for being used at sea and in the air.
Around 1920 - 1930s the golden years for Longines started. The factory had a remarkable growth from 20 to 2.500 workers, who produced more than 122.000 pieces every year. Longines would be recognized as the constant and steady companion of many pioneering aviator in a decade that aeroplanes and airships were recognized as military and exploration tools of great importance. Aeroplanes started to experience several problems such as magnetism, moisture, low temperatures, issues which had to be overcome right away. And Longines was acquainted with theses issues after having experienced the Artic cold temperatures. It was during this era that Longines would produce its most famous two wrist watches -- the Weems and the Lindbergh models. (The Lindbergh is also referred to as the Hour Angle Watch.) In 1930, Admiral Richard E. Byrd would arrive to the South Pole for the first time. His trips would always find him with a Longines on his wrist.
The A. Wittnauer Co. would become the exclusive sales agent for Longines in1880. This relationship lasted for the next 114 years. In 1936, the Wittnauer family sold A. Wittnauer Co. and renamed the Longines-Wittnauer Co. the name became so pervasive that some people think that the watches are synonymous. But, of course, they are not. Their movements are distinct and not interchangeable with one another.
World War II and beyond
The company began to produce military issue watches during the Second World War. Most of these watches were for the European forces. In 1994, Longines and Wittnauer parted company, and Swiss giant SMH, which holds title to Hamilton, Omega and Tissot, got the name.
Chronographs
The company started to show its affinity with sporting events during the 30s and 40s, producing a lot of unusual types of chronographs. Many were manufacturer with Longines's own movement, unlike the rest of the companies which would rather buy chronograph from other companies. Therefore, the Longines chronographs, those which were produced from the 20s to the 50s are highly prized and have their own separate niche in the collecting world.
The best of Longines's chronograph movements was said to be the Caliber 13 ZN. It was first released in Longines' 2-register models, but was later adapted for use in its 3-register models. The following chronographs would show movements made by Valjoux and others. These are not recognized nearly as collectible as the chronographs with Longines' own movements
