Gevril LegacyThe Gevril watch company was begun by Jacques Gevril in the mid-1700s in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland's center of watch-making for centuries. He was a sought-after master of horology, and he created his first chronometer in 1743 and his first repetition dial in 1744. Most notably, he was called upon by the King of Spain in 1758 to produce a personal timepiece, which went over so well that Gevril was appointed as Royal Swiss Watchmaker to the Spanish Crown. The Gevril family tradition of watchmaking was passed onto Jacques's son, Moyse Gevril, and in 1784 he achieved the status of Master Clockmaker. During the 1800s, the Gevril family expanded their art to include enameling as well as the creation of dials for their watches. Gevril timepieces are displayed in museums across Europe--most notably the Museum Geneve and the Rolex Museum (where a Gevril pocket watch is displayed in the collection personally selected by the Wilsdorf family, the founder of Rolex).
The company was purchased by Samuel Friedmann in 2000, who believed the Gevril name represented an ideal combination of history and future potential. Today's signature Avenue of Americas line is based on a case design from the 1920, which was discovered after going through Gevril's raft of historical documents and design books. It has a retro look, but is updated with a bevelled dial with raised, hand-painted numbers and straight chrono pushers for a contemporary feel.
Creating a Gevril timepiece is exhaustive, and Gevril expends years into the design and manufacture of its rare and enduring timepiece collections. It manufactures only limited edition collections, with 6,000 Gevril watches created each year and each line limited to 500 (stainless steel) or 100 (gold) pieces. The company also sources only the best materials and accoutrements, including 316L stainless steel, natural mother-of-pearl dials, Wesselton diamonds calibrated by CNC machines and Louisiana crocodile skin.

In 1867, Emmanuel Lipman and his sons founded a clockwork workshop under the name of Comptoir Lipmann. In 1893 it became the Societe Anonume d'Horlogerie Lipmann Frères (Lipmann Brothers Clock Factory).
The firm launched the Lip stopwatch in 1896. Thereafter Lip became the brand of the company. They built around 2,500 pieces a year. The company launched the first electronic watch in 1952, called "Electronic" (it was not electric because of the presence of a diode). The first models were worn by Chales De Gaulle and U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1948, a T18 was offered to Wiston Churchill.
However, in the 1960s, this highly specialized company began to have financial troubles. Fred Lipmann brought the company public in 1967, and Ebauches S.A. (subsidiary of ASUAG, a large Swiss consortium which later became Swatch) took 33% of the shares.
Meanwhile, workers started organizing to improve labor conditions. This proved difficult. t, Chales Piaget the son of a clock artisan, who had entered the factory in 1946 as a skilled worker, became a representative of the Confederation Francais des Travailleurs Chretiens (CFTC, French Confederation of Christian Workers) trade union. He later recalled that during national strikes, only 30 or 40 workers at LIP out of a total of 1200 would go on strike. Those who did strike were listed by the management and called in to explain themselves. Semi-skilled workers on the assembly line were not allowed to talk or move more than 25 centimeters (less than ten inches) during their shifts.
Fred Lip tried to smooth down the growing discontent. However, he offered Piaget a promotion, naming him head of the workshop. For the next year, the workers blocked attempts to eliminate the department, opposing those who tried to move the machines out of the factory.
They also registered the names Chronometre Lip and Chronometre de France, in a period when the accuracy of a watch was a major selling point. It’s widely assumed that they used these names on dials of non-chronometer watches to trick people into thinking they were chronometers. However, it’s not certain that the watches were not certified as chronometers. Lip regularly won medals, bulletins and awards from the Observatoire de Besançon (the French equivalent of the COSC), and at the start of the 20th century claimed that their top grade watches were regulated to “a minute a month”. Movements which were chronometer-certified by Besançon, were stamped with the viper’s head, and this is probably the best indication. It’s also worth noting that some of their chronometer-certified watches do not have “chronometre” on the dial.
However, Ebauches became the biggest shareholder in 1970, taking control of 43% of the stock. Ebauches then fired 1,300 workers. The next year, the board of directors forced Fred Lip to resign, replacing him with Jacques Saint-Esprit.
From 1968 to 1973, distributed Breitling chronographs in France, including the Navitimer, Cosmonaute and Superocean. The watches were signed on the dials by both Breitling and Lip..
LIP built the first French quartz watches in 1973, but had to face increasing competition from the United States and Japan. The firm was forced to start liquidation formalities on April 17, 1973, leading Jacques Saint-Esprit to resign on the same day.

LIP watches was one of the premier French brands to invest massively in publicity and advertising. In 1914, this brand had a dream opportunity of supplying watches to the artillery officers of the French army. Then came another grand project. The company became the purveyor to the French aviation industry. In 1948 the French government was proud to present a watch of impeccable French technology to Winston Churchill. And for this the government chose an LIP timepiece.
Always a precursor of the watch world, the LIP watches were successful, despite initial financial problem to offer the market with the premier prototypes of quartz watches in 1971. But the soaring flight of the enterprise was cut down due to various adversary circumstances and in the 1980s became a dark decade for the company. Ten years later in 1990, Jean-Claude Sensemat took over the activities of the enterprise and founded the LIP France Company. There was no looking back after that. Eventually LIP watches got a new lease of life in the hands of Sensemat. There was another change in the sobriquet of LIP in 2002. LIP France became Sensemat LIP France.

Jughans MEGA
The company is located in Schramberg, Baden-Wuttenberg. On 15 April 1861 Erhard Junghans created the company „Junghans und Tobler“ together with his brother-in-law Jakob Zeller-Tobler in Schramberg
The company began to produce wristwatches in 1927. Beginning in the 1950s, the virtuoso designer Max Bill created clocks and watches for Junghans and the relationship lasted many years. A remarkable example of his work is a wall clock he designed in 1956/57 that is in the collection of The Museum of Modern Art (New York). In 1962 Bill also created mechanical wristwatches for Junghans – impressive timepieces, not only for their aesthetic design, but also their precision.
In the late 1980s, Junghans introduced the first radio-controlled table clock on the world market. In 1990, the first radio-controlled wristwatch followed, called the MEGA 1. In 1995 Junghans presented the ultimate combination of the solar powered watch with ceramic housing and solar-powered technology. Currently, Junghans is developing with the Japanese clock maker Seiko a globally oriented wristwatch, which automatically sets the local time in respective time zones.
Junghans is a well-known brand in Europe

BRIEF HISTORY OF LONGINES-WITTNAUER WATCHES
As soon as Ernest Francillon opened a small manufacturing plant, which started to produce the following year, the story of Longines started in 1866. Francillon, who was the grandson of Auguste Agassiz (a pioneer of Swiss horology whose name appears on wrist and pocket watches of high-quality), learned his trade at his grandfather's watch assembly shop, the "comptoir". He would finally become director of the shop, but this thirty-two-year old man got acquainted with the limits of the comptoir and the areas in which he would be more likely to have a better production.
The first Longines watches arrived in America in 1868. A few years later, Longines was awarded a gold medal for precision and reliability at the Universal Exposition of Vienna. To prevent himself from imitation, Francillon decided to trademark the dials on his watches with a winged clepsydra and the word "Longines".A clepsydra is an ancient device which measured time by marking the regulated flow of water though a small opening. Looking carefully at the centre of the Longines trademark a small box that represents this device is seen.
The company eventually departed from this procedure fairly quickly because there are several Longines watches that do not have the logo. In 1889, Longines provided five chronometers to the Italian explorer Luigi Amedeo, who did his best to reach the North Pole. His failure is hardly noted in history books, but the mark Longines'illuswtrious history as the watch choice by explores and adventurers.
In 1904, Longines furnished chronometers to a U.S. naval exploration of the North Polar Region. Unfortunately, Robert E. Peary was the first to reach the North Pole in 1909. Longines, unfortunately, missed the chance to be part of that event. At the beginning of 1900s, Longines started to express an interest in gentlemen's wrist watches and joined other Swiss makers which showed the same interest as well.
The Longines Co. states that the first wrist watch was cased in 1905. The first wrist chronographs to appear in the sports market were seen in 1910s. Moreover, Longines produced military watches for World War, some of the, with pierced shrapnel covers, "demi-hunter" cased varieties, and others for being used at sea and in the air.
Around 1920 - 1930s the golden years for Longines started. The factory had a remarkable growth from 20 to 2.500 workers, who produced more than 122.000 pieces every year. Longines would be recognized as the constant and steady companion of many pioneering aviator in a decade that aeroplanes and airships were recognized as military and exploration tools of great importance. Aeroplanes started to experience several problems such as magnetism, moisture, low temperatures, issues which had to be overcome right away. And Longines was acquainted with theses issues after having experienced the Artic cold temperatures. It was during this era that Longines would produce its most famous two wrist watches -- the Weems and the Lindbergh models. (The Lindbergh is also referred to as the Hour Angle Watch.) In 1930, Admiral Richard E. Byrd would arrive to the South Pole for the first time. His trips would always find him with a Longines on his wrist.
The A. Wittnauer Co. would become the exclusive sales agent for Longines in1880. This relationship lasted for the next 114 years. In 1936, the Wittnauer family sold A. Wittnauer Co. and renamed the Longines-Wittnauer Co. the name became so pervasive that some people think that the watches are synonymous. But, of course, they are not. Their movements are distinct and not interchangeable with one another.
World War II and beyond
The company began to produce military issue watches during the Second World War. Most of these watches were for the European forces. In 1994, Longines and Wittnauer parted company, and Swiss giant SMH, which holds title to Hamilton, Omega and Tissot, got the name.
Chronographs
The company started to show its affinity with sporting events during the 30s and 40s, producing a lot of unusual types of chronographs. Many were manufacturer with Longines's own movement, unlike the rest of the companies which would rather buy chronograph from other companies. Therefore, the Longines chronographs, those which were produced from the 20s to the 50s are highly prized and have their own separate niche in the collecting world.
The best of Longines's chronograph movements was said to be the Caliber 13 ZN. It was first released in Longines' 2-register models, but was later adapted for use in its 3-register models. The following chronographs would show movements made by Valjoux and others. These are not recognized nearly as collectible as the chronographs with Longines' own movements.
